New Preferred Hepatitis C Medication for Medicaid Members
Date: 09/20/23
Texas Medicaid has named Mavyret (glecaprevir/pibrentasvir) the preferred medication to treat hepatitis C for Medicaid members. Mavyret is made by a company named AbbVie. They have partnered with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission to reduce hepatitis C in Texas. If you are a Medicaid member with hepatitis C, you can discuss this option with your doctor.
Hepatitis C is a serious viral infection. Many people who get hepatitis C may not feel sick at first. If the virus is not treated, it can damage your liver and increase your chance of developing diseases like diabetes and other medical conditions. For many people, hepatitis C is treated and cured with medication.
Direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) are drugs that treat hepatitis C. These drugs can help many people, no matter how long they’ve had the virus or the damage it has caused. Mavyret is a type of DAA drug prescribed by your doctor. It can be used to treat people who are 3 years old and older who have hepatitis C.
This drug is usually taken for eight weeks. It can be taken longer as decided by your doctor. Your doctor can prescribe Mavyret for the whole length of your treatment, so you do not need to ask for refills.
If you have hepatitis C, talk to your doctor to find out more about Mavyret. Call Member Services or review the Texas Health and Human Services Commission website for more information.
