National Hospice and Palliative Care Month

Date: 11/20/23

November is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. When your loved one has a serious illness or is near end-of-life, these methods of care can provide comfort and improve their quality of life.

Palliative care

  • Primarily used to improve quality of life during serious illness.
  • Aims to help the individual manage stress and anxiety as well as their physical pain.
  • Is often given while the individual is getting treatments for their illness.
  • Can involve your doctor, social worker or religious leader.

Hospice care

  • Is usually requested by the individual.
  • Is for individuals who have a terminal illness and are approaching end-of-life.
  • Focuses on comfort and pain management.
  • Usually takes place in your home or nursing home.

Palliative care and hospice care are often offered at the same time. They both aim to improve quality of life by helping the individual manage symptoms and pain.
