Help Patients Reverse Type 2 Diabetes with Virta

Virta is an online specialty medical clinic that reverses type 2 diabetes safely and sustainably, without the risks, costs or side effects of medications or surgery. Effective July 1, 2021, patients are eligible for Virta if they have type 2 diabetes and are covered by Superior HealthPlan (STAR, STAR+PLUS, STAR Kids, STAR Health), Allwell from Superior HealthPlan or Superior HealthPlan STAR+PLUS Medicare-Medicaid Plan (MMP).

Virta’s physician-led team coordinates care with providers as Superior members safely reduce and eliminate diabetes medication, while blood sugar stabilizes through the Virta treatment.

Virta supports providers by:

  • Helping members meet clinical goals for diabetes management (A1c, weight, etc.).
  • Providing daily nutrition and behavior counseling to members, as well as diabetes medication management.
  • Supplementing primary care by providing regular reporting on member medication reduction and elimination.

Members on Virta receive:

  • Medical supervision. Patients use Virta’s continuous, technology-enabled remote care from Virta’s physician-led team to safely reduce and eliminate diabetes medications.
  • Personal health coach. A dedicated health coach provides personalized guidance and accountability to create long-term behavior changes that lead to sustainable results.
  • Personalized treatment plan. Virta accounts for each person’s unique biochemistry, medications and lifestyle, resulting in a highly-individualized approach to carbohydrate intake.
  • Biomarker tracking tools and supplies. All supplies needed to participate in the Virta treatment are shipped directly to the member, including a body weight scale, a glucometer and testing supplies to monitor blood glucose and ketones.

Results of Virta’s clinical trial1 showed the following results at 10 weeks after patients started treatment:

  • 56% reversed type 2 diabetes (HbA1c below 6.5% at follow-up)
  • 1.1% average reduction in HbA1c reduction
  • 20% average reduction in triglycerides
  • 91% patient retention
