COPD Resources for Healthcare Providers

November is National Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Awareness Month. Superior HealthPlan encourages healthcare providers to utilize the American Lung Association COPD-related best practices, education resources and essential COPD support resources to help support members living with COPD. The follow courses can be accessed on the American Lung Association Training and Certification webpage:

  • COPD Educator Course: This course is a professional education course that includes thorough and practical information for healthcare professionals who work with COPD patients such as:
    • Respiratory therapists
    • Internal medicine nurses
    • Pulmonary nurses
    • Pharmacists
    • Care managers

Healthcare professionals can earn continuing education credits for this course.

  • Spirometry Training: Implementation and Interpretation of Spirometry in the Primary Care Practice: This course is designed especially for healthcare professionals who are responsible for administering and implementing the spirometry test and primary care providers who will be interpreting the results to assist with diagnosis and disease management.
  • Ask, Advise, Refer to Quit, Don't Switch: This training is based on the CDC's Ask–Advise–Refer model and utilizes updated tools and strategies for conducting an effective brief tobacco intervention with patients identified as tobacco users, including e-cigarettes. This course seeks to target healthcare professionals who may have direct patient contact and may initiate a brief tobacco intervention.
